Rudolf Ribarz

Rudolf Ribarz - Obrazy 19. století

(Vienna 1848–1904) “Schloßruine von der Leyn an der Mosel” (Ruins of Castle von der Leyn on the Moselle), according to an inscription on the reverse in the artist’s own hand, signed Ribarz, oil on canvas, 65.5 x 81 cm, framed, (Rei)

Label from the Vienna Künstlerhaus 1898, 4458 authenticated by Dr. Wladimir Aichelburg. According to Dr. Wladimir Aichelburg, the label originates in 1900,1965 from another picture by the same artist (apparently framed by the artist himself.) This painting depicts the only moated castle on the Moselle. It was originally the family seat of the lords of Leyen, who received the title of prince in the 18th century. Several archbishops of Trier and Mainz arose from this family. The fortress was probably built in the 12th century and was recorded in 1272 for the first time. Around 1560 the fortress was converted into a castle and in the 19th century parts were extended in the neogothic style. Today it houses an exhibition of the state archives.
