Frederik Marinus Kruseman
(Haarlem 1816–1882 St. Gillis) Winter Landscape, signed (ligature), dated F. M. Kruseman 1857 fc., old gallery label on the reverse inscribed “Winter landscape ... sold to Mr. J. J. Sanford by ... 19 April 1862”, and confirmation in the artist’s own hand “... Brussels May 1857”, oil on canvas, 50.5 x 70.4 cm, framed minor damage, (Rei)
Frederik Marinus Kruseman came from a family of Dutch artists. Sojourns in Paris, Fontainebleau and Belgium had a significant impact on his artistic output. Influenced by Koekkoek, his œuvre was primarily one of landscape depictions throughout the seasons. Kruseman often enriched his paintings with decorative figures, animals, ruins or houses. With the exception of the hunter and his dog, the winter landscape in the present lot is repeated again in a painting executed in 1861 and found today in London. (Cf. Marjaan van Heteren, Jan de Meere, 1998 Frederik Marinus Krusemann 1816–1882, Painter of Pleasing Landscapes, cat. no. 136, p. 186.
We are grateful to Prof. Jan de Meere for confirming the authenticity of the painting on the basis of a photograph.
