The original painting by Raffael, executed circa 1505, is currently part of the permanent collection of the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Raffael’s work, part of the Collezione Duca di Terranuova to 1854, was purchased for Berlin in 1854 at the behest of the famous art historian and director of the Gemäldegalerie, Gustav Friedrich Waagen. Accompanied by three written communications attesting that Mr C. W. Lilie copied the painting after the original by Raffael in the Gemäldegalerie in a “true and diligent” manner, including ones by Prof. Hertig in 1856 and by Gustav Friedrich Waagen in 1856.
