Max Schmidt studied at the Berlin Academy under Wilhelm Schirmer, Carl Joseph Begas and Carl Krüger. In 1843 and 1844 he travelled through the Orient, from 1847 to 1853 to Southern German, Italy, the Ionian Islands and Provence. Back in Berlin Schmidt took part in the painting of the Egyptian Collection and the Greek Courtyard at the city’s Neues Museum. From 1868 onwards he taught at the Kunstschule in Weimar before being called to the academy in Königsberg in 1872. From 1874 to 1880, and again from 1890 to 1901, he was the deputy director of the academy there (Cf. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Schmidt_(Maler); 7.8.2013).
