Marija Karadjordjevic was born Princess Marie von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in Gotha. In 1914 she became Princess of Romania and in 1922 married Alexander Karadjordjevic, King of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. She bore the title Queen of Yugoslavia from 1929 onwards.
It’s a good piece of Jovanovitch’s portrait style of 1920-ies and the Queen wears typical national costume of the South Balkans, with a necklace and diadem which in this case appears to be an additional symbol of royality. This portrait is dedicated to Mr. Nikola Berkovitch who was the director of the State Bank in Sarajevo before II World War and a friend of Jovanovitch.
