The subject portrayed is Elise Dorothea Friederike, Baroness von Schaezler, née Baroness von Süsskind (1810-1831), according to a label on the reverse. Her father, Johann Gottlieb Süsskind, was a successful banker in Augsburg, regarded as the richest man in Swabia at that time. By marrying his children within influential noble circles he achieved even greater standing for his family. Thus Elise was married to the Augsburg banker Wilhelm, Baron von Schaezler in 1829.
