Kept by its first owner in Vienna until 2000 and only 2 keepers since! Extensive service history, matching numbers! Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new SL at the Geneva Motor Show of 1963. It was intended to achieve the incredible feat of replacing two much acclaimed predecessors at once – the incredibly powerful 300 SL and lower performance 190 SL. The 230 SL is an evolution of the latter, which also marked the end of the era of unique and limited editions. However, the modern body designed by Paul Bracq was given an engine with an edge that, when it evolved into a new fuel-injected version, turned the 230 SL into a snappy and very powerful sports car. This SL was, of course, also produced as a coupé, this time featuring a distinctive concave 'pagoda' roof, after which the W113 series was named. The 230 SL presented here was supplied new to an architect in the 3rd District of Vienna in December 1964, who, according to the vehicle's original datacard, had ordered the 230 SL in classic sliver grey (180) with a hard top of the same colour, a black leather interior (201) and a black soft top (720). Initially registered in the company's name, the SL was regularly used by its owner for trips between Vienna and Salzburg, putting around 20,000 km on the Pagoda's clock a year. On 3 June 1969, at a mileage of 82,396 km, it was fitted with a brand new engine by Mercedes with the original engine number, as verified by the engine's own service history record. The Pagoda entered a quieter period of life after it was registered at the owner's private address at the beginning of the 1970s. In 1978, it moved to Salzburg together with its owner and after his death, was inherited by a nephew who barley used it and took it of the road ten years later in 1993. The vendor was able to purchase the SL from the nephew in 2000 and started restoring it to its full former glory. He had the nearly rust free Pagoda resprayed in its original colour, seat heating, new seat covers and a Getrag 5-speed transmission fitted, which makes the SL much more suitable for long-distance travel. The original gearbox and steel rims are also included with the Pagoda! In 2010, just before reaching 15,000 km, the vendor replaced the pistons, and even though it is nearly 20 years since this car was restored – as, naturally, is clearly evident in some places – this SL is a joy to behold and unique when it comes to history.
