Franz Christoph Janneck (Graz 1703–1761 Vienna)
A wooded landscape with travellers, oil on canvas, 60.5 x 81 cm, framed
Provenance:
sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 1 Oct. 2003, lot 243;
Austrian private collection.
Certificate:
Dr Christina Pucher, Graz (September 2001).
Dr Pucher has included the present painting in her catalogue raisonné of the paintings by Franz Christoph Janneck as no. WK 249L. She dates the work around 1730 and compares it to two landscape paintings by Janneck now in the Belvedere in Vienna and in a private collection in Munich (dated 1731). During the period between 1725 and 1731, Janneck devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting. Dr. Pucher: “The palette of green and brown hues is ingeniously complemented by a spectrum of brighter colours used for the figures of the main scene. The central axis is dominated by a gnarled oak tree whose distinct rendering corroborates influences from the Frankenthal painting school and the Lesser Masters of Antwerp. This also holds true for the figural staffage. The atmospheric view into the distance on the left side shows Janneck’s highly developed skills in the handling of colour…”
