For this latter version, see Dr. Gustav Glück, Klassiker der Kunst, Van Dyck, Stuttgart /Berlin 1931, repr. p. 234, as dating from 1630–32.
In the present painting, the heads – the head of the Madonna and the head of the Christ Child – were executed by Anthony van Dyck himself. The master’s hand reveals itself in the delicate colouristic treatment of the complexion in both figures, the subtle modelling of the flesh with blushes and shadows, and the highlights in the figures’ eyes.”
