View of the Neptune Fountain and the Water Organ at the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, oil on canvas, 69.5 x 89.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Construction of the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, with its imposing gardens, began under Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este in 1560. It was designed by the painter, architect and archaeologist Pirro Ligorio of Naples, and realised by the court architect Alberto Galvani. The entire valley was completely transformed. In 1605 the existing structures were repaired under the orders of Cardinal Alessandro d’Este and the overall design of the gardens updated. Gianlorenzo Bernini was also involved in further building work which was undertaken between 1660 and 1670. The villa and gardens were allowed to fall into disrepair during the 18th and 19th centuries before being comprehensively renovated during the 20th century and opened to the public. In 2001 the villa and gardens were added to the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. The grounds slope away from the villa and are a masterpiece of garden design. They house over 500 fountains, nymphs, water features, pools, grottos and a water organ (ref. www.wikipedia.de, 15.7.2010)
