We are grateful to Dr. Annalisa Scarpa for identifying the painting as the work of Giambattista Pittoni.
A similar painting depicting an Astronomer was auctioned on 13 December 2000 by Christie’s, London (lot 100). The Allegory of Winter, auctioned on 13 December 2000 at Christie’s, London (lot 182), is also comparable to the present picture; although attributed to Marco Ricci, it is closer in style to the work of Pittoni. These are obviously works strongly influenced by Sebastiano Ricci, although the fine drawing and the subtle rococo style assigns them to Pittoni.
Further comparisons can be drawn with the Saint Hieronymus in the Museo Civico in Rimini, and likewise there are similarities in the head of the old man on the right in the painting Olindo and Sofronia in the Museo Civico in Vicenza.
