Andrea Scacciati

Andrea Scacciati - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Florence 1642–1710)
Tulips, lilys, hyacinths and dahlias in a porcelain vase,
oil on canvas, 55 x 72 cm, framed

We are grateful to Professor Sandro Bellesi for confirming the attribution of the present work on the basis of a digital photograph.

Bellesi dates the present work to the mid-1680s, the period in which Scacciati was in his artistic prime. The porcelain vase and arrangement of the flowers are reminiscent of the series of six paintings formerly in the Poggio Imperiale, Florence. Today four of the paintings survive, held in the Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome. Although the present painting demonstrates strong similarities with these works it does not, however, appear to be one of the lost paintings, differing in the design of the vase’s base.

Together with his son Pietro Neri, Andrea Scacciati was active at the Medici court and is well known for his still lifes with flowers. His works display both Roman and northern influences, particularly in the contrasts between light and shadow and the clarity of the composition which Scacciati interpreted in a Tuscan manner.
