Walther Bernt writes about Maes and his works: “Later on, his art … was likewise dominated by a Flemish influence, above all his portraits, which constitute the vast majority of works in his oeuvre and which began to reveal a dramatic and fashionable tendency towards the end of the century. At the same time, he displayed a preference for mythological or allegorical costumes in the style of antiquity. His backgrounds are usually made up of dark park landscapes with distant views of evening skies. The skilful distribution of light and shade, a beautiful red tone, and softly nuanced hues contribute to a charming treatment of colour...”.
