The present work has traditionally been attributed to Francesco Melzi (Milan 1493–c.1570 Vaprio d’Adda) and is registered by the Fototeca Zeri (no. 32816, prior to restoration).
Francesco Melzi was the scion of a noble family and a favourite pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. He first met Leonardo at the age of 14, accompanying him to Rome in 1513 and subsequently to France in 1516 where he worked with Leonardo until his death. He was able to learn the essentials of art and science from Leonardo. The numerous records of his life contrast with his few known artistic works, for example the painting Young Woman with Lute (Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit), or the Portrait of a Young Lady (Colombine) in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and dated 1520.
