Antonio Francesco Peruzzini

Antonio Francesco Peruzzini - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Ancona 1646/47–1724)
Hilly landscape with figures on the banks of a river,
oil on canvas, 99 x 145 cm, unframed

This painting exhibits a landscape composition typical of Peruzzini’s work: washerwomen by a river, in the background the towers of a town with dramatic cloud formations. Peruzzini was one of the most important landscape painters of the late 17th and early 18th century.
He was born in the mid-17th century in Ancona and he played an important role within the artistic milieu of Grandduke Ferdinando de’Medici in Florence. Alongside artists, such as Alessandro Magnasco, Sebastiano Ricci, Crescenzio Onofrio and Marco Ricci, who had found a new pictorial language for landscape painting, he contributed to the ongoing development of the genre from its roots in the traditions of the 17th century, which would have an impact beyond Tuscany.
