Jan Blom (Amsterdam 1622–1685) and Johannes Lingelbach (Frankfurt/Main 1622–1674 Amsterdam)
Jan Blom (Amsterdam 1622–1685) and Johannes Lingelbach (Frankfurt/Main 1622–1674 Amsterdam)
An elegant park with a hunting party,
oil on canvas, 73.5 x 60 cm, framed
Johann Lingelbach moved from Frankfurt/Main to Amsterdam with his parents in 1637, where he undertook his apprenticeship as a painter during the ensuing years. Following a study tour to Paris, he spent several years in Italy from 1644, which would strongly influence Lingelbach’s artistic oeuvre. Lingelbach became known for his generously proportioned Italian scenes. It is also known, however, that he was repeatedly commissioned, due to his skills, to paint figural groups for the works of other artists. Lingelbach bought a house in Antwerp from his painter colleague, Blom in 1662, which is evidence of the fact that both artists also had personal connections aside from their professional collaborations. As is demonstrated in this painting, Blom specialised in the representation of villas, gardens and park landscapes after the Roman model, which were also influenced by a previous stay in Italy, as was the case for Lingelbach.
