Jacob van Huysum
(Amsterdam 1686–1740 London)
A pair of still lifes with pears, peaches, grapes, pomegranates and other fruits,
both signed lower left: Huysum f.,
oil on canvas and oil on panel, each 64.5 x 55.3 cm, framed (2)
Jacob van Huysum was born into a family of flower painters in Amsterdam. His father, Justus van Huysum (1659–1716) was already a successful and well-known still life painter. Jacob and his brother, Jan (1682–1749) made the name, Huysum one of the most important within still life painting in the 18th century. Works by Jacob and Jan have been repeatedly confused, particularly in the United Kingdom, which may also be the case with these paintings originating from an English private collection. In around 1720, Jacob van Huysum moved to England, where he came to the attention of Sir Robert Walpole. Huysum executed numerous decorative schemes for Houghton Hall, Sir Robert’s estate (today owned by the Marquess of Cholmondeley). He was also active as an illustrator of botanical books.
