Garemijn, who was considered to be one of the most important exponents of Flemish Classicism, was appointed professor at the Bruges Academy in 1756. He was known above all for his religious scenes and large decorative cycles. This painting is an important part of his oeuvre in its elegance and classicising sophistication. Comparable paintings by the artist are to be found at the Groeninge Museum in Bruges.
