Bartholomeus Abrahamsz. Assteyn - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Dordrecht 1607–1667)
Still life with grapes, peaches and other fruit in a porcelain dish,
oil on canvas, 53 x 64.2 cm, framed

Provenance:
collection of Antonio und Liliane Mariani, San Francisco.

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, who has confirmed this painting to be an authentic work by Assteyn having examined a photograph of it. In the “Lexikon der holländischen Still lifemaler im 17. Jahrhundert” it states, “Bartholomeus Abrahamsz. Assteyn was one of the painters of the Bosschaert School, that is, of the circle of painters, who came under the stylistic influence of Ambrosius Bosschaert and his followers. Assteeyn’s work demonstrates a close affinity with the work of Johannes Bosschaert, one of the sons of Ambrosius Bosschaerts the Elder... Characteristic of his still lifes with fruit are leafy branches and twigs and plump grapes. L. J. Bol describes Assteyn’s artist development as a move from multi-hued to tonal coloration, from a hard to a supple, flowing treatment of forms, from a richly contrasting representation of light and dark to a more natural lighting in his pictures...”
