attributed to Paul Bonnacker
(active in Nuremberg circa 1620/30)
Ecce Homo,
oil on panel, 49.5 x 39 cm, unframed
Dr Rainer Stüwe, Wilhelmsfeld, to whom we are very grateful for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of this painting, writes, “Paul Bonnacker was active as a copist of the works of Dürer, as well as executing work imitating those of Hans Hoffmann. It should be noted that the Ecce Homo motif in the work of Hans Hoffmann is very probably based on a lost panel by Albrecht Dürer, which was very popular in the years around 1600. For this reason, there are many imitations of this motif in the work of various masters of this period. In this case, this is probably a copy at second hand of Dürer’s painting via a copy by Hans Hoffmann, which can be deduced because of the traces of blood missing in other panels featuring this motif. This panel is provisionally a reworking of the original painting attributed to Paul Bonnacker and may be dated to 1620/30...”
