Daniel Woge

Daniel Woge - Obrazy starých mistr?

(Berlin 1717–1797 Neustrelitz)
A rural scene with portraits of three members of the ducal house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Princess Christiane and her brothers, the future dukes, Adolf Friedrich IV and Karl II),
oil on canvas, 64 x 55 cm, framed

Although this painting is not primarily a portrait, instead being a fête champêtre featuring princely protagonists, it has been possible to identify those portrayed quite reliably. The extremely intimate nature of the picture is underlined by the artist’s avoidance of any of the usual attributes of nobility. Another sister, Charlotte, became Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and then of the United Kingdom, as the wife of George III. Comparable paintings by Woge, painter to the ducal Mecklenburg court may be found in the palaces of Schwerin and Ludwigslust, as well as at Windsor Castle (from the estate of Queen Charlotte). His palette, with its elegant spectrum ranging from pastel colours to various tones of grey, corresponds with the then emerging German Classicism, whereas the subject matter is still reliant on the iconography of the Rococo.
