Giuseppe Recco

(Napoli 1634–1695 Alicante) Tulips, Roses, Peonies, Anenomies and other Flowers in a Vase Signed `GIOSEPPE RECCO´, oil on canvas, 130 x 91.5 cm.

Provenance: Important Private European Collection;

Giuseppe Recco, together with Giovanno Battista Ruoppolo, was the most important painter of still lifes in the second half of 17th Century Naples (see R. Middione in AA. VV., Natura morta italiana tra Cinquecento e Settecento, catalogo a cura di M. Gregori, Milano 2002, p. 474). The importance attached to the present composition is demonstrated not only by the care and attention to detail given by the artist, but also by the prominent signature which would imply that the artist himself wanted to clearly emphasize its paternity. This still life is a mature work and displays Recco´s ability to create harmonious compositions of flowers which display an understanding of the international canons of still life painting in important centres outside of Naples such as Rome, Flanders and Spain.
