Franz Xaver Kosler: The artist was a pupil of the Oriental painter, Leopold Karl Müller, at the Vienna Academy. In 1886 he undertook a study trip to Dalmatia, Montenegro and Albania, and in 1894 a further trip to Egypt. A first exhibition in Cairo, in which he showed a collection of his paintings, made him well-known and resulted in portrait commissions from the Egyptian prince, Said Pascha Halim. Kosler travelled to Egypt again during the winter of the following year. In Vienna he painted for Archduke Ferdinand Karl and others, and submitted works to the exhibitions at Vienna’s Künstlerhaus. In 1899 and 1906 he submitted works with Egyptian themes to the Glaspalast in Munich and the Royal Academy exhibition in London. Today most of Kosler’s works are in private English ownership.
