Josef Carl Berthold Püttner

(Plan, Bohemia 1821–1881 Hallstatt) Naval Battle at Helgoland, signed JBC Püttner, inscribed “Seeschlacht bei Helgoland... Konteradmiral Wilhelm Tegethof” on the reverse, oil on canvas, 79 x 118.5 cm, framed (W)

Inscribed on the reverse: Property of Herman Freiherr von Spaun. Counterpart to Lot 434 Wilhelm von Tegetthoff: (Marburg 1827–1871 Trieste) Tegetthoff attended the Austrian naval academy in Venice from 1840 to 1845. After his appointment as a naval officer he took part in the blockade of Venice in 1848 and 1849, and in many expeditions undertaken by the Imperial Navy. With his excellent performances at sea and his diplomatic and organisational abilities, Tegetthoff quickly distinguished himself as a naval officer. During the German-Danish War, fighting on the side of the Austro-Prussian alliance, he was able to secure victory for Austria in the naval battle by Helgoland, despite heavy losses. This resulted in his promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral and new position as Commander of the Austrian fleet which he then proceeded to restructure. He was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Military Order of Maria Theresia and a promotion to Vice Admiral. In 1868 he was made k u.k Admiral and Chief of the Naval Section at the War Ministry. Tegetthoff died in 1871 at the early age of 43.
