Catalogued in: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Vol. II,2, p.953, No. 8. Exhibited: Berlin Jubilee Exhibition 1886; Munich Jubilee Exhibition 1888. Albrecht Frans Lieven Vriendt: He received his first art lessons from his father whom he helped to decorate the University of Ghent. He attended both the Academy in Ghent and the Academy in Antwerp where he studied, amongst others, with L. de Taye and V. Lagye. Together with his brother Juliaan, Vriendt travelled to Germany, Italy and Egypt. He was Director of the Royal Academy in Antwerp from 1891 to 1900 and in 1892 appointed an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy. Influenced by de Biefve, Dürer, Holbein, Cranach and the Ghent and Brugge Primitives, his genre was chiefly historical paintings.
