(Regensburg 1838–1913 Munich) Cupid Playing the Tambourine, signed J. Watter (18)94, oil on canvas, 73 x 145 cm, framed, (W)

Joseph Watter: „Watter, son of a porcelain painter, first attended the Munich school of arts and crafts before enrolling at the Academy in 1859 where he became a pupil of Arthur Ramberg and Philipp Foltz. His first public exhibits were of genre paintings and motifs taken from the world of fairy tales and sagas. During the 1860’s he became a member of the Fliegenden Blätter (“Flying leaves”) and an illustrator for publishing houses. Commissioned by King Ludwig II, he created several works for the palaces of Linderhop and Herrenchiemsee. J.Watter also designed the monarch’s set of “historical china”. Watter‘s talents were eclectic. Not only did he paint in oil and create designs for china and glass painting, but he was also a knowledgeable decorator, working on artistic celebrations, as well as a costume designer.”(Bruckmanns Lexikon der Münchner Kunst, Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhunderts, Munich 1983, Vol. 4, p. 337f.)
