Eugen Adam

(Munich 1817–1880) Military Camp in Dalmatia, signed and dated Eugen Adam 1870, oil on canvas, 67 x 91 cm, framed, (Rei)

Eugen Adam: The artist was the third son of Albrecht Adams who gave him his first artistic instruction. During his youth he made lithographs of some of his father’s pictures. He spent the period from 1843 to 1847 studying in Hungary and the former Yugoslavia. In 1848 he travelled with his father and brother Franz to Italy to make sketches and studies of the Austrian military campaigns, and remained in Italy afterwards. In 1859 he was in Italy once again, this time working as the pictorial reporter for the newspaper Über Land und Meer. He then went on to provide illustrations of the German-French war of 1870-71 for the newspaper. In addition to his work as a pictorial reporter, he painted, producing oil paintings such as “Bazeilles on the Evening of 1st September 1870” or “Ulanen Bivouacing Outside Paris”. (Compare: Bruckmann’s Lexikon of Art in Munich, Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhundert, Vol.1, Munich 1981, p. 14.) We are grateful to Dr. Ulrike Hase-Schmundt for assistance in cataloguing this work.
