Josse Francois Le Riche d. J.

(Sèvres before 1782-after 1813 Versailles) A still-life of flowers in a metal vase on a marble pedestal, remains of signature lower left, oil on canvas, 73.5 x 61.2 cm, framed

This still-life was painted by the as yet not equivocally identified court painter to the French queens, Maria Leszczynska and Marie Antoinette, who was employed by the direction des bâtiments du roi as the peintre des bâtiments de la reine. This was probably Josse Francois Le Riche the Younger, who worked for the manufactory in Sèvres between 1782–1789 as a flower painter. Ironically, Le Riche did not just work for the Queen, but also for the Countess Dubarry, the last mistress of Louis XV. The artist began working for Marie Antoinette on the decoration of the Belvedere at the Trianon. His relatively small oeuvre accorded splendidly with Louis XVI’s generally light and cheerful artistic taste. Faré features three comparable still-lifes by Le Riche from the Doucet and Marcus collections (see M. and F. Faré, La Vie Silencieuse en France - La Nature Morte au XVIIIème siècle, Fribourg 1976, pp. 271–276) which correspond to the decorative requirements of this era.
