Jean Louis Laneuville
(Paris 1748–1826) Portrait of Edouard Jean Joseph van de Velde (Brussels 1798–1840 Schaerbeek), label on reverse with biographical details of the sitter, oil on canvas, 60 x 47 cm, framed
Laneuville was one of the most talented pupils of Jacques Louis David, who was among the most popular portrait painters, particularly during the French Revolution. As is evident in the present painting, he generally placed his finely delineated models against a cool, monochrome background, a characteristic which he shared with his teacher. Since the sitter came from an important family of Brussels tradesmen, this portrait may be associated with Jacques Louis David’s stay in this city (David was exiled from France by Louis XVIII as a regicide). There is little known about David’s activity as a portrait painter in Brussels or, indeed, about Laneuville’s work in the same field. The latter had been active as an art dealer and agent under Napoleon. The present portrait represents an outstanding example of the cool, elegant painting of French Classicism. We are grateful to Monsieur Hubert Duchemin, Paris, for his attribution to Laneuville
