José Garcia el Hidalgo

(Muriedro circa 1650–1717 Madrid) attributed to Portrait of the Spanish Infanta Margarita Teresa (1651–1673), oil on canvas, 60 x 51 cm, in a richly carved and gilded old frame

Provenance: Baroncelli Collection, Palais du Roure, Avignon. The attribution to José Garcia el Hidalgo was confirmed by Prof Enrique Valdivieso, Madrid, to whom we are grateful for his assistance. José Garcia el Hidalgo, who trained in Italy under Pietro da Cortona, Salvator Rosa and Carlo Maratta, was later in the employ of the Spanish Kings, Charles II and Philip V. He was closed associated with Juan Carreno y Miranda, with the result that his works were attributed to the latter on occasion (see the small plate attached to the frame with an attribution to Carreno y Miranda). The Infanta portrayed here, Margerita Teresa, daughter of King Philip IV and Maria Anna of Austria, had been married since 1666 to her uncle, Emperor Leopold I. After the birth of her sixth child, she died at the age of 22. See the portrait of the Infanta in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, which is attributed to a Spanish court painter.
