The bearded man of this painting seems to combine the facial features from the Apostles Peter and Paul from Dürer’s Four Apostles (1526) in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. The attitude of the man and the intense colour of his eyelids refer to German Mannerists of this period such as Hans Bocksberger (circa 1510–1561) and Georg Lemberger (circa 1490/1500 – circa 1540/45).
We are grateful to Rainer Stüwe for his kind assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
The present painting relates to Hans Baldung Grien's Head of an old man in Berlin, Gemäldegalerie (inv. no. 552B).
