Vittorio Matteo Corcos

Vittorio Matteo Corcos - Obrazy 19. století

(Livorno 1859–1933 Florence)
Portrait of Corinna Salmon (1858–1929), signed, dated and inscribed
V. Corcos Dipinse nel Giugno 1893, oil on canvas, 208 x 134 cm, framed, (GG)

Certificate Issued by Dr Francesca Dini, ref. 002605, is available.
We are grateful to Dr Dini for her kind assistance in the cataloguing of the present lot.

The present painting depicting Corinna Salmon (1858-1929) was commissioned to Corcos and destined to be displayed at Palazzo Semana on Via Roma in Livorno, along with its pendant featuring Corinna’s husband, Nathan Semama. Corinna was the daughter of banker Saul Salmon and mother Leonetto Semama, a prominent figure in early twentieth-century Livornese society who was well known for his links to leading figures of the time, including the Livornese musician Pietro Mascagni.

Corcos skilfully embeds the portrait of Corinna, then thirty-five years old, within an Empire salon, its walls covered in a sumptuous textile of pale green colour and decorated in gold. The same colours characterise the Empire-style dormeuse on which rests the sitter, enveloped in tulle and the light reflexes of her white silk garments embellished with gold stars.
