Johann Baptist Anker (Ancker)
(Ettenheim/Straßburg 1770 - after 1824)
Portrait of a young noble man in an armour, sash and coat, holding a rapier in the left hand, next to him a helmet, standing in a landscape, according to tradition a member of the Prince Dietrichstein family, signed and dated Anker pinx. 1790, watercolour on ivory, 15,3 x 10,9 cm, oval format, framed, the label Collection Figdor on the reverse Nr. 373, (Hu)
Provenance:
Collection Albert Figdor (1943-1927), Vienna (numbered 373 on the reverse); collection Ernst (1893-1963) and Lilli Marischka (1900-1978), Vienna; their heirs - private collection Austria.
Species protection (ASA).
The miniature is well documented and recorded in the books by Leisching and Schidlof as Johann Carl Graf Khevenhüller-Metsch (1839–1905). Research in the family archives do not confirm this assumption.
Listed and illustrated in:
Eduard Leisching, Die Porträtminiatur in Österreich, Vienna 1907, p. 246, Fig. p. 105. Leo R. Schidlof, The Miniatures in Europe, Graz 1964, Vol. I, p. 45, ex coll. Figdor.
