Frank Markham Skipworth
(Castor, Lincolnshire 1854-1929 London)
A Young Lady with Black Ostrich Feather Hat, signed, dated FM Skipworth 1900, oil on canvas, 121.5 x 93 cm, framed (frame slightly damaged)
Frank Markham Skipworth studied at the Lincoln School of Art and spent from 1879 to 1882 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where his works were exhibited from 1883 onwards. He specialised in portrait and genre painting, and his style was reminiscent of paintings by his teacher William-Adolphe Bouguereau, under whom he completed his artistic education in Paris. Accordingly, in this lot he depicts the sitter with a dreamy look on her face, wearing a magnificent black dress as she sits in an armchair covered with red fabric. She stands out strikingly against the plain background and seems to be lost in thoughts.
