Felix Ziem studied architecture in Dijon and initially worked as an architect. After several study trips through Italy and Russia he made painting his profession. From 1845 onwards he regularly sojourned in Venice which was a source of inspiration for him. In 1849 he exhibited at the Paris Salon, and from 1860 onwards he lived in Paris and Nice. In 1901 he was officially appointed naval painter of the French marine. The town Martigues in France houses the Museum Ziem.
