This painting depicts a dingy and foggy autumn view over Chioggia and its main canal, the Canal Vena, where the traditional fish, fruit and vegetable market takes place. Here, the artist chooses to represent the melancholy of the end of the day, when everyone is leaving and all that remains is the merchants in the process of arranging their unsold merchandise. The atmosphere is misty and marked by twilight, with the modest buildings and the boats at rest reflected in the water of the lagoon.

The Giuseppe Miti Zanetti moved to Venice in 1884 and, after buying a boat, he explored every hidden corner of the lagoon, aided by the twilight atmosphere of the canals.
The work was exhibited at the 3rd Venice Biennale and at the Retrospective ‘Thirty Years of Venetian Art (1870-1900)’ held at the 12th Venice Biennale in 1932. In the pages of the ‘Illustrazione Italiana’ of 1899, we read that this lot is “full of poetry and beautifully painted by virtue of its lines and colouring”.
