The present painting is a bust-length variant of the prime version in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Variants in this size seem to have been popular. The present one is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished versions. A comparable work was sold at Christie’s, London, 26 February 2013, lot 447 (as After Sir Anthony van Dyck).
