First Marie Egner studied in Graz with her drawing teacher Hermann von Königsbrunn. Then she went to Düsseldorf, where she was a pupil of Carl Jungheim from 1872 to 1875. In 1882 she came to Vienna and became pupil of Emil Jakob Schindler in1887. Being a member of his circle she painted in Plankenberg castle in Lower Austria in the summer months. Sojourns for study reasons took her through Europe and soon she celebrated first successes. Egner had exhibitions in Vienna‘s Künstlerhaus, in Germany and in England. She belonged to the Vereinigung bildender Künstlerinnen Österreichs (union of women artists in Austria). From 1930 on she lost her sight and withdrew from public life. She painted plein-air and was mainly occupied with landscape painting and with flower pieces.
