Giuseppe Canella

Giuseppe Canella - Obrazy 19. století

(Verona 1788–1847 Florence)
A Lively Scene on a Market Square, signed, dated Canella 1820, oil on panel, 13 x 17.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection Germany.

Son of Giovanni Canella – an architect, painter and set designer – the Veronese painter Giuseppe Canella trained under the guidance of his father from a very early age. After working in Mantua in the decoration of several palazzi, he moved to Venice between 1811 and 1815, where his studies of the 18th century Venetian vedutisti left a lasting impression on him. It is from that moment onward that the artist successfully pursued the genre of landscape painting, finding inspiration in the works of Francesco Guardi, Bison and Tranquillo Orsi.

The following lot is dated 1820, the year Canella left Venice to travel around Spain in search of new sources of inspiration. The scene transports the viewer to a southern village, where a colourful crowd is streaming out of the church into a picturesque market square filled with merchants. After his Spanish sojourn, Canella later travelled to Paris where he exhibited at the Salon 1826-1827 enjoying tremendous success. Upon his return to Italy 1832, he received numerous commissions from high-ranking Milanese families and established himself as one of the foremost view painters of the early nineteenth century.
