Alois Schönn

Alois Schönn - Obrazy 19. století

(Vienna 1826–1897 Krumpendorf)
Oliv trees at the Bay of Trau (Trogir), Dalmatia, signed A. Schönn, oil on canvas, 65 x 121 cm, framed (frame damaged)

After his studies at the Wiener Akademie, Alois Schönn was the first Austrian painter to undertake from his own initiative several long study trips to Northern Africa, the Balkans and Anatolia. His travels left a lasting impression on the artist, who would intensely engage with oriental subjects for the rest of his lifetime. The following lot depicts a family of goat herders dressed in traditional costume, against the backdrop of a seascape – an example of Alois Schönn’s ability to paint scenes full of local charm and colour, without losing a realistic view of the characteristics of the country and its people.
