A View of Vienna from the Krapfenwaldl at Dusk, monogrammed IZ., oil on canvas, 64 x 85 cm, framed
Compare:
Österreichische Galerie, Belvedere, Rudolf Matthias Toma, Wien vom Krapfenwaldl 1834, inventory no. 5, 821.
The painting shows an elevated view of Vienna seen from the Krapfenwaldl, located in the 19th district of Döbling in Vienna. The forest was built in the 18th century by Franz Joseph Krapf, the privy councilor of war but the land was later acquired by Prinz Johann von und zu Lichtenstein who gave it its characteristic design. Throughout the 19th century, the lands were extensively used for entertaining and hunting, and became a favored strolling location with a panoramic view of the city.
This particular work illustrates the peaceful atmosphere of the Krapfenwald.
The artist manages to capture the picturesque landscape before the light fades into dusk. His use of atmospheric perspective and meandering hills allow the viewer to follow the path along with the figures. The artist paints an ordinary yet intimate moment, as the couple serenely stroll arm-in-arm. Despite the unknown identity of the subjects, their presence in the foreground also adds a narrative quality to the painting.
