Ferdinand Leeke was a Bavarian painter who became known for his depictions of fairy tales and mythological scenes. He studied at the Munich Academy under Ludwig von Herteich and Sandor Liezen-Mayer. There he learned to combine dramatic landscapes and sculptural figures into a narrative. Leeke's popularity rose especially after he had been assigned by Siegfried Wagner, son of the famous composer Richard Wagner, to paint scenes from the composer’s operas. In the present drawing, Leeke depicted elements from Wagner's opera Thannhäuser, which is embedded in German mythology and medieval legends and treats the dichotomy between profane and sacred love, as well as redemption through love, as the central theme. Depicted is the scene of the first act, in which the hero willingly lives as a prisoner of Venus in her Venusberg. The world of Venus is consecrated exclusively to sensuality.
