Luigi Querena
(Venice 1824–1887)
Venice, View of the Molo with the Palazzo Ducale, signed, dated Luigi Querena 1881, oil on canvas, 41 x 54 cm, framed
Provenance:
Sale, Sotheby’s, London, 27 June 2007, lot 209;
there acquired by the current owner, Private Collection, Italy.
Exhibited:
Piazzola sul Brenta, Villa Contarini, L’armonia del vero: vita e paesaggi tra terre e acque: 1842–1932, 10 September - 30 November 2015, no. 39.
Catalogued and illustrated in:
Exhibition catalogue, Luisa Turchi, L’armonia del vero: vita e paesaggi tra terre e acque: 1842–1932, Allemandi ed., 2015, p. 130, no. 39.
A characteristic view; looking towards the quay, the florid Gothic style of the southern façade of the imposing Doge’s Palace is minutely described, allowing a glimpse of the pyramidal top of St. Mark’s bell tower. These two landmarks are joined by Jacopo Sansovino’s Libreria Marciana with the adjacent Zecca in the piazzetta in the background, alongside the two massive red and grey granite columns known as the Columns of Mark and Todaro, topped by the winged lion and the Greek warrior saint Theodore, the first patron saint of Venice, respectively. This picture is part of the artist’s traditional repertoire.
