Consol, bay stallion, by Lottery out of a mare by Cerberus, was born in 1828, bred and owned by George Walker. Trained by the great John Scott “The Wizard of the North” at Malton, Yorkshire, in 1832 Consol won races at Aintree (Tradesmen’s Gold Cup) and York, and in 1833 the Stand Cup at Aintree (ridden by George Edwards) and the Gold Cup at Preston (ridden by Sam Darling), plus a further race at Doncaster. After the present painting was made (1833), Consol went on to win the King’s Plate at Lancaster in 1834 and the following year the King’s Plate at Newmarket, both times ridden by John Scott’s brother, Bill. In 1837 Consol was sold to the pioneering breeder Elijah H. Boardman of Huntsville, Alabama, and exported to the United States, where a promising career at stud was cut short by Consol’s early death in April 1839.
