Giulio Carpioni was celebrated for his classically inspired compositions, especially triumphs, bacchanals and dancing putti. For the bacchanal composition, in particular, he took inspiration from Titian’s famous paintings of the same subject. Another probable model was Poussin’s Bacchanals, which had been reproduced in engravings by Pietro Testa.
The painting presented here can be compared in particular to the Bacchanal in the Accademia Carrara, Bergamo (inv. no. 905), similar in size, in which the figure of the fat, drunken Silenus supported by young helpers is reproduced almost identically in counterpart.
Carpioni was one of the most talented Venetian painters in the seventeenth century. He was a pupil of Alessandro Varotari, Il Padovanino. Around 1631, Carpioni left for Bergamo together with Varotari, where he came into contact with the Lombard school of painting. On his return to Venice, he met Pietro della Vecchia. In 1638, Carpioni is documented in Vicenza, where he lived until his death in 1674.
