Karl Maria Schuster was an Austrian painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, and undertook numerous study trips, first through Italy and North Africa, and later through many other countries around the world. He soon distinguished himself as a landscape painter, but was also in demand as a portrait painter of Viennese society and political figures. In 1903, he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Before the First World War, he worked as court painter to King Carol I of Romania, and during the war he served as a war painter on the south-west front, for which he was honoured with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Francis Joseph.
