A rare Boulle ornamental writing desk,
Vienna c. 1710/20, walnut veneered softwood frame on a table-like support with stretcher and gilded sphere decor, the front lavishly engraved with brass and pewter inlays, the cabinet with 9 drawers, writing compartment with pull-out hinged top, 2 large and 4 small interior drawers, c. 125 x 106 x 78 cm, well-kept condition with slight signs of wear.
Typologically, the present piece of furniture derives from the Antwerp cabinet (Hendrik van Soest), in which both the combination of materials and this specific architecture were employed for the first time at the close of the 17th century. However, no tortoiseshell is used in the present specimen.
