Lotto No. 163 +

Tapestry,

Tapestry, - Collezione Reinhold Hofstätter

Felletin, Ateliers de la Marche, Northern France, c. 291 x 354 cm, first third of the 16th century, overall in good condition, coarse weave of silk and wool with numerous large repairs, narrow outer borders replaced, lower main border no longer preserved, a linen fabric is attached to the back – a new supporting linen is recommended. The tapestry was professionally restored in 1950. The second carpet from this series is very similar to the first in terms of the construction of the pattern, vegetation and size. King David is portrayed as a hero with a lance and is recognisable by a harp on the breastplate and on the corner of the horse. His companions are a halberd carrier and a rifleman. The banner is no longer complete and, as is customary, elucidates the personal merits of the hero in the first person: “Who killed Goliath, the treacherous giant, and slew him with a stone; the psalter (...)” (a reference to David as the author of numerous psalms). The indecipherable letters on David’s drapery are most likely just ornamental.

We are grateful to Prof. Sylvia Huot for translating the inscription.
