South German c. 1480–1500, lime wood hollowed out on the back, residual traces of old painting, height 41.5 cm.
Provenance:
1975 exchange with the Collection of Wolfgang Hofstätter (1929-1977), Vienna
Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich, until April 1975 (mentioned in the Messmer Inventory in 1869 under the number 4530 as “Unkol. Holzrelief S. Anna”, later inv. no. MA 1488) The present group was already mentioned in the first inventory of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, the so-called Messmer Inventory. On the back of the Christ child, a label with the inventory number 4530 is still preserved. Additionally, the hollowed backside of the sculpture also features the number 855K. VI, which is cited in Hugo Graf’s 1896 inventory.
