Attributed to the Master of Saint Christopher with the Devil

Attributed to the Master of Saint Christopher with the Devil - Collezione Reinhold Hofstätter

(active in the Austrian Danube region between 1500 and 1520)
The Feast in the House of Simon the Pharisee,
oil on panel, 61 x 37.5 cm, framed

The unknown master to whom the present painting is attributed worked in the Austrian Danube region subsequent to 1500. He was influenced by artists such as Rueland Frueauf the Elder, Michael Pacher, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Jörg Breu the Elder. Researchers became aware of the artist as a result of the “Christophorus Magdalene Altar” (around 1510/15) held by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich.
Characteristic recurring details include the slightly chubby, peasant’s face with posed lips, the idiosyncratically modelled hands and the significantly bulging calves. In addition, the master’s handiwork is not only recognisable through the forms depicted, but also through the light colours which are almost pastel in tone.
